Matrei in Osttirol
Where the Tauernbach beck enters the Isel river, there you will find Matrei, the biggest municipality of Eastern Tyrol.
Altitude: 1,000 m asl
Located only few kilometres from the city of Lienz, Matrei stretches across the high mountains of the Hohe Tauern, the Tauerntal Valley and the Upper Iseltal Valley. Matrei boasts more than 150 3,000 metres high mountains and the two highest mountains of Austria: Grossglockner (3,798 m) and Grossvenediger (3,674 m). A hiking paradise right in front of your door!
Climbers are provided the ideal prerequisites and beginners can take advantage of a first-class indoor hiking facility. On request, climbing classes are held, which introduce you to theoretical aspects, climbing techniques and the basic knots. And the rest of the day you may engage in mini golf, cycling, mountain biking, tennis, rafting or horse riding - there will be something for everyone. And if you seek adventure we recommend you a rafting tour on the Isle river, the last untouched glacial stream of the Alps.
In winter, sports enthusiasts can look forward to the skiing area Matreier Goldried, which boasts one of the most regular snowfalls all over Austria. The base station lies right in the centre of Matrei, where a 4 seater cable car takes you to the summit in 8 minutes only! 35 km of ski runs provide lots of fun and lots of choice to the whole family. By the way: the skiing area Matreier Goldried belongs to the “Top Ski Osttirol” ski region, which means that you can access some 350 km of ski slopes with one single ski pass. Bright prospects indeed…
