Avelengo

Where the Haflinger horses are at home

Altitude: 1,290 metres above sea level

Nestling on the sunny plateau of Monzoccolo Mountain and at only 10 km from Merano lies the picturesque village of Avelengo. Among its numerous natural highlights is a breath-taking view ranging from the Texel, Brenta and Ortles mountains to the Dolomites and even the Ötztal Alps.

Avelengo includes four quaint little hamlets and is a paradise for hikers and lovers of horses alike. Because here you will find those good-natured and light-coloured horses called Haflinger in German (and Avelignese in Italian). Why not take some horse riding classes at one of the numerous riding stables which are spread all over the plateau?

Families may embark on a light walk along the educational path of the Sulfner Pond. A rich flora and sparkling white water lilies promise a special kind of experience. And the mineral collection of Falzeben is also worth seeing. Other sites of interest include the quaint 13th cenutry church of St. Kathrei as well as two religious shrines, dating back to the the 16th century when the Black Death claimed numerous victims.

Winter brings an atmosphere of peace and serenity to the picturesque village. And the skiing area of Merano 2000 is within easy reach. A ski kindergarten, baby lift, tobogganing run and a free shuttle are provided. As well as traditional inns and après-ski bars :-)
