Caldaro
Caldaro is actually known for two characteristics: producing top quality wines and boasting a wonderful and warm bathing lake, famous Lake Caldaro.

Caldaro includes the hamlets Paese, Villa di Mezzo, Pianizza di Sopra e Pianizza di Sotto, Pozzo, San Antonio, San Nicolò, Castelvecchio and San Giuseppe al Lago. Nestling at the slope of the Mendola mountain, the area is rather hilly and steep and thus reminds the most beautiful hikes. The wines of Caldaro were first mentioned in the 13th century already.
But Caldaro also boasts one of the steepest and longest funicular railways all over Europe. Built in 1903 in San Antonio, it takes you right to the saddle of Passo Mendola and manages an altitude difference of 850 m, an incline of 64% and a length of 4.5 km - all within 12 minutes! And once you have reached famous Passo Mendola, it provides a fresh clean air and a beautiful landscape to hikers, mountain bikers and families alike.
Hikers may embark on a trip from Passo Mendola to the Penegal mountain. After 1.5 hours they will be rewarded with a stunning view of entire Oltradige Valley, Bassa Atesina, Renon and the fascinating Dolomites. By the way: the fresh summer air on the Mendola mountain attracted such famous visitors as Austrian Emperor Franz Josef.
