Collepietra

The mountain village of Collepietra is part of the 1st European Star Village, which shows you the sky above the Val d’Ega valley

A mountain road with 15 hairpin bends connects Prato all'Isarco in the Valle Isarco with the village of Collepietra (Steinegg) in the middle of the Val d'Ega - both belong to the same muncipality. Always known and visited for its unique location, it has also been well-known to hobby astronomers for some years now. Here in the Val d'Ega, the First European Star Village has recently come into being, mainly in the area of Collepietra and San Valentino in Campo above it. The Max Valier Observatory and the Planetarium South Tyrol are located in San Valentino in Campo.

Collepietra, on the other hand, takes you along the Star Trail to a rocket tree house in the middle of the forest, and some of the accommodation facilities are also theme-based: Here you can stay in rooms with telescopes, constellations, stars above the beds and even in a space shuttle. It is not for nothing that the sky above the Val d'Ega was already described by the platform Astronomitaly as "one of the most beautiful night skies in Italy".

But here, high above the Tires Valley, there is another special feature: These are the Collepietra Earth Pyramids, which can be easily reached on the Pyramid Trail. The boards along the way tell about the formation and the secrets of these earth pillars. The area around Collepietra, surrounded by Mt. Latemar and Mt. Catinaccio, was covered by huge masses of glaciers during the last Ice Age. In contrast, the Collepietra Local Museum, one of the most beautiful local history museums in South Tyrol, focuses on rural life, old crafts and also painful memories of the wartime.
